Elderwish volunteers visit area retirement and nursing homes and invite residents to “make a wish” for a gift of their choosing. Oftentimes the brief visit by our volunteers is the greatest gift, and we are able to bring some joy into an otherwise dreary day just by our presence.
Volunteers encourage each senior they visit to make a wish, and often provides some suggestions. Typical gifts include magazines, crosswords and word search puzzle books, slippers, note cards and stamps, or CDs.
After collecting a list of wishes, we then promise to return as soon as possible with each gift, usually within two weeks.

Volunteer Positions: Volunteers are needed to meet with residents and solicit gift ideas, to purchase the items, and then to deliver them. You may chose to serve in all three capacities, or just one. Many of our volunteers are unable to drive, so if you are willing to do no more than take our volunteers to and from the home, that too would be welcomed.
Training: There is no formal training required. Typically we meet with new volunteers for just a half hour to an hour before their first visit, to share some tips.
Time Commitment: Volunteers are free to set their own schedules, and may visit residents as often or infrequently as suits them. However, it’s important that gifts be promptly delivered once a request has been received. We aim for a maximum of roughly two weeks between receiving request and delivering the gift.
Equipment Needed: none
